Birmingham Airport Information

Birmingham Airport (BHX) is located just over 6 miles southeast of Birmingham City in Bickenhill. It was first opened in 1939 as Elmdon Airport, 11 years after the city council had decided the city needed a municipal airport. After a stint as an RAF base during the Second World War the airport returned to civilian flight duty in summer 1946 still under government control, with the City of Birmingham regaining control in 1960. The airport’s regular destinations include many internal destinations as well as Ireland, Belgium, the Middle East, the Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland, with seasonal flights to many more holiday destinations. The airport is home to Flybe, Monarch, Ryanair, Thomas Cook Airlines and Thomson Airways amongst others.
