The University of Leeds began life under its current name in 1904 after splitting from what would eventually become the University of Manchester and the University of Liverpool. It has had to share the city of Leeds with Leeds Metropolitan University since the latter gained university status in 1992. Leeds has around 33,600 students making it the eighth largest U.K. university by student population and currently receives the second highest number of student applications amongst all U.K. universities.
Leeds station provides links between the city centre and other major U.K. cities by train and both universities are around a ten minute walk from the main station exit. However, you’re more likely to find yourself heading from the station to one of the major halls of residence rather than the universities themselves. If you’re heading to the collection of halls (North Hill Court, James Baillie Park, Devonshire Hall) on North Hill Road you might find the walk of 45 minutes a bit much! Leeds has a free city bus that does a circuit of the centre every few minutes but this does not cover the outskirts or the popular sporting venues.
Leeds offers something for everyone on the sporting front; with Leeds Rhinos Rugby League team sharing the Headingley Carnegie with Leeds Carnegie Rugby Union team which backs onto Headingley Cricket ground the home of Yorkshire CCC and international cricket matches. These grounds are a few miles north-west of the city centre and take around 8-15 minutes by taxi depending on traffic – book in advance to make sure there are cabs available on the busier days. If you’re a fan of the beautiful game then you can catch Championship side Leeds United FC at Elland Road to the south-west, a journey that will also take you around 8-15 mins (a cab would also save you the £6 parking fee!).
Leeds’ large student population means there’s always something going on, whatever day of the week you want to head out. What part of the city you end up in depends on what you’re after: live music, clubs, bars, pubs, restaurants or perhaps the sprawling market off New York Street and Vicar Lane?
